Re: How Much do you charge to wetsand a vehicle? - 12-09-2009, 02:44 PM

My main concern here is for you guys ......................wet sanding is not the answer for making a car show quality. I reserve wet sanding in only extreme measures, or you have a stubborn scratch that polishing won't remove.

If you work on your buffing technique, speed ,pressure and pattern and compound variations is all you need to get a true show car look. wet sanding is "NOT" for the novice !

To ease your concerns (haha) - I'll go out and say that I only really wetsand when I do something like paint touch ups. I've never really wetsanded an entire car, but I know folks who have and it takes a lot longer than a couple of hours to get it done (right). In all fairness, while you can be a great polisher jockey, there's just some things you need to use the paper for if you're going to be a serious detailer I think. That's just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

I don't believe in grit guards.

With that kind of turn around on sanding, it's a shame you're not in the auto body/painting world. You've really missed your calling.

EDIT: After reading your second post there, it seems like you have some sort of chip or better than you attitude... What's that all about?

I read what I could on the site - No one has said you don't know what you're doing. We are just questioning how you can do something so quickly. I know some damn good painters, and using DA's they can't do a sanding job to satisfaction in a couple of hours - not to mention the final hand sanding with high grit paper.

You gotta understand, there's probably at least one or two guys a month that come on here making the incredulous claims. People are gonna question that. You being all defensive instead of describing your process and such doesn't help.

whatever................ not defensive just it is what it is. I do n't use a DA, too time consuming plus I like to feel the paint when I sand, your finger tips are your guide. I learned from some folks that did this long before me, and I listen to people that know what they know, that is how you become the best.

and true detailer , I see your a mobile detail out fit , well that's all good , but I hope the environmental guys don't get after you. where is your water recycler ?
I am not boasting on here as I am very humble about what I know about paint on cars. and I do not appreciate the comments that i ma some fly by night shop. I will be happy to match expertise with any of you guys any day

Didn't think I would stir everybody up with this post..But maybe we could get back on topic with this, How often do you get somebody asking you for a wetsand. Is it more of a service that you need to go out and market yourself by finding somebody with a show car that really needs it, or do people just come to you asking for it? Like I said I have done a few spot wetsands on scratches so this is nothing I could do soon but if I wanted to learn more in depth can anybody recommend me to a DC member or training class in my area
