Nanoskin Auto Scrub - need advice

I just got my Auto Scrub in the mail today and I used it on the hood and fenders on my black 2011 Ford Mustang. I noticed a bit of marring on the paint and I was looking to see if there was something I needed to do to break in the mitt, or if it was my technique. I was able to get out the marring with Mequiars 205, so it wasn`t too bad. However, I am leery of using it now however because I`ve never had this issue with clay bars.

Here is the technique I used:

I rinsed off the mitt and rang it out before using it. I then dunked it into my wash bucket filled with Mequiar`s car wash. I went over a small 2x2 section with light pressure, then dipped the mitt back in the wash bucket, swished it around and repeated the process for half the hood. When I rinsed it off the hood, that`s when I noticed the marring - lots of it.
Figuring it might be something with the car wash, I rinsed off the mitt and then tried it while using HD Touch (detailing spray) as a lubricant and had similar results. Thinking back now, I only sprayed the surface, not the mitt, so that may have been an issue.

Thanks for reading. Any advice is appreciated.

What grade was the mitt? You need to break in a new mitt on your glass before using it on your paint. I hope you don`t expect to clay your black paint without polishing after.

I bought the fine grade. I haven`t found anything about breaking it in on the glass. How do I go about doing that?

I always polish after clay barring, and I did that in this case as well.

I have the same fine grade mitt, I think the breaking in on glass tip is written there in the directions on its paper cover.
I used ONR as lube and rinsed the mitt with pressure washer (on low pressure setting) after every section or 2 and didn`t have marring on my opti-coated granite crystal (dark grey) grand Cherokee..

Yep, it`s written in the helpful tips under directions on the back of the packaging:

    Helpful Tips:

The AUTOSCRUB has a protective coating to ensure stability within transportation.

To break in the pad, moisten the AUTOSCRUB with desired lubricant.

Moisten a portion of window glass or other glass surface. Rub AUTOSCRUB in circular motion against the glass for 30~60 seconds. You may see a white soapy foam. This is the

protective sealant coming off. Don’t use until the polymerized rubber is soft and slightly tacky.

Cold temperatures may stiffen pad. Warm surface before using.
Overall I`ve found all of these clay bar alternatives are generally more aggressive than traditional clay bars. But removing the protective coating on the wash mitt on glass should give you better results.

Did you wash the car first and rinse it well, and then use this towel on it?

I like to pressure wash to remove big and tiny things in moldings, letters, door and trunk jambs, then wash and rinse the vehicle, and then use my SM Arnold rubberized towel with DODO Juice Born Slippy Claybar lube...

And I never get marring, etc., on hundreds of black vehicles including BMW Jet Black...

You have to finesse this towel as much as you would a Claybar...

You are not sanding like you learned in wood shop class, etc.,, you are carefully listening and feeling the paint for coarseness and then smoothness, as you run this over the paint...Gentle to low pressure to start..

Then you stop, wipe of that section dry, and with a dry clean hand, feel the paint very lightly and determine if its all at the level of smoothness you are trying to get..

Now, you have a guide line on how much lube, pressure, etc., to move forward with..

And I am totally on board with using a new towel on all the glass with a clay lube, to first off, really clean the glass great, and break in the towel enough so it wont be so grabby..

its some type of rubber that is sticky when dry and hot, so it needs to be handled with care especially on any dark or black paint.. But you know this now...

    Good luck !

Damn, I only read the directions, not the helpful tips.

Thanks for all the responses - I found a lot of white material in my wash bucket when I went to rinse it out, perhaps that was the coating.

I`m curious to know if anybody uses this product with regular car wash instead of a wash and wax or spray detailer type of product.

Yes, you can use a car wash for lub.

My fine grade Nanoskin did the same thing on the black paint of my Saleen. I even broke mine in on the glass. The black Ford paint is just super soft. You can take a fingernail and rub it across my paint and it will mar it. I also used my fine grade nanoskin it on two Audi`s (hard paint) and it worked really well. It just depends on the paint.

That is good to know. Do you just avoid using the nanoskin on your mustang, or do you only use it in the places that feel contaminated?

Update: I broke in the Nanoskin mitt and I tried it on a 10 year old oxidized GM black paint yesterday. This time I used my HD Touch as a lubricant and I rinsed off the mitt halfway through each panel. It did not cause any marring, however it did make a lot of sections look like they had been wet sanded.
I do not know if the wet sanded look was due to the oxidized paint, my detail spray, or if there was some other issue. Either way, it was easy to polish out, and the paint was incredibly smooth after the process.

Because of the marring I will probably avoid using it on my personal car in the future and just use regular clay instead. I`m not trying to knock any of the "speedy prep" alternatives that are out there. I like them, I really do. But like all things in detailing it just depends on the car. Sometimes mine mars, sometimes it does not. I always assume it will mar, and always polish afterwards. If you do get marring, it is light and polishes out easily with a fine polish.
