Help: Wet Sanding + Wool = Buffing Marks - 07-18-2006, 10:51 AM

Like the title. I have a demo from the Hyundai dealership and had to wetsand a bad paint job. They asked if there will be any hologram marks, and I said no.

And there are.

What process to get them out? I have:
-a DW849
-wool pad (3M)
-Edge 2000 system (waffle & reg)
-Farecla G6 & G10
-Poorboy's whole line
-Ardex Medium Cut

I would either DA/RO with a medium polish or rotary with a fine pad/polish then DA/RO.

IMO, I never trust finishing with a rotary to leave no holograms. I always finish with a DA (my PC)

PEI. Here's what I would try for starters:

Grab your PC, and put on a clean/dry polishing pad. Work a 2x2' area with SSR2.5, and clean up with SSR1 & another dry polishing pad. Try this on an area and report back.

Remember, you can use PB's in full sun, which you'll need to check your work. Holograms are hard to spot under shop lights.

This should take care of your problem, unless the holograms are ridiculous.

Exactly what I would have said

I'd do pass with the wool pad and SSR2.5, Yellow Edge pad & SSR2.5, follow up with the green Edge pad and SSR1, then finish off with the blue Edge pad. I've lest some nasty holograms with Optimum Hyper Compound and a yellow Edge pad so that combo can obviously cut pretty well. I'd do a full 3 step polish just to be sure there are zero holograms left behind. I rarely find myself having to do a 3 step but when I do I always start aggressive and work my way down from there, always had good luck that way

If there are a lot of holograms, maybe you didn't soak the paper long enough? What grit did you use?

I used 2500 Unigrit, which I soaked.
I have a Rotary, not a PC. I've done it dozens of times, but never had the holograms, so I'm not certain how to get rid of them.

I'd say you have not cut into the paint hard enough with the wool pad and medium cut compound. This will be quite the messy job, but nessecary for good results.

How much cutting action does a 3M wool pad have? Do you have any of the Edge wool pads? If you plan on doing a lot of jobs like this you'd be amazed with how well the Edge black pad works. It throws a lot of lint around, hence the "mess" like Dan stated, but its one hell of a cutting pad

Yes, when my 15-20 Velcro Waffle pads wear out, i am gogin to give the edge pads a try.

The 3M Wool pads will cut liek any other wool pads, aggressive. My post above I was refering to foam pads.. Foam all cuts the same, but I noticed that a differnt technique needs to be used with differnt styles..

I just did a A8 (black) with some serious scratches and orange peel , my process was as follows:
Wetsand 2500 ( not the whole car, mostly 1/4 panels)
Makita
CG3 w/ wool pad (3 pads used)
CG2 w/Yellow Cutting Pad (2 pads used)
CG1 w/Blue Finishing Pad (1 pad)
DA
Butterwax

It's not to different from whats been suggested, I spent over 4.5 hours on the exterior( I thought it was pretty fast with the amount of work there was)
Hopefully you find a solution.Good Luck

4.5 hours is not bad condiering you had to do some wetsanding.

Re: Help: Wet Sanding + Wool = Buffing Marks - 07-19-2006, 11:56 AM

So it wasn't a problem.
I used G10 (extra fine) slowly with the wool pad and reduced it some.
Then:
SSR2.5+yellow Edge
SSR1+green Edge
SSR1+blue Edge
It was sunset so I didn't trust the light reading. So this morning it was 95% gone. I did a light buff with a white pad and finished it off with Souveran. It is still a bad paint job, but way ahead of where it was.

I just got anxious because I hadn't caused holograms much.

4.5 hours is great! I spent more than that on the hood, though that was wetsanding twice, first with 20003m then 2500megs.
