I'm a DeWalt guy.
Everyone seems to have different preferences when it comes to rotaries. I carry the DeWalt and the Makita. People who have used both either love the DeWalt and hate the Makita or vise versa.
Bottom line is... both are proven machines and will stand up to heavy use but the Makita is priced slightly better.

I have a Hitachi..its a work horse...but a bit on the heavy side, but mines over 20 years old and still going like a champ!..my orbital is a De Walt and its also a work horse...meaning that I've had these for years without one issue...NONE!
I would buy a De Walt in a minute as my next rotary...good pricing..&..dependable

It's just like cars and women. It comes down to personal preference. I use the Makita and love it. I think the Dewalt and such are too heavy. The lighter rotaries like the Metabo are known for overheating and breaking down and they are very expensive. I have played with the Flex rotaries and didn't care for them either. Their speed control seems like it fluctuates. The Makita is tried and true and is a happy balance of weight and reliability and at $169, it packs a lot of bang for the buck. Good luck with the hunt.

I looking to upgrade my rotary as well. I also have a HF.
I have tried the Makita and like the way it felt in my hand, so I will look to get one myself.

I just got a Makita after using a UDM for a year. Most of the reviews on various sites say the makita is the best bang for the buck. I can't wait for the weather to get warmer to really put the 9227 through it's paces.
