Taping off prior to using PC - 05-05-2006, 03:50 PM

I will be using my PC7424 for the first time shortly. Do most of you tape-off areas that should not get product on them like grills, polypropylene bumpers, trim, etc?

If you do tape, do you just use a narrow masking tape, or is there some other quick-apply tape you use that might be nice and wide.

Thanks

The blue painters' tape works pretty good for trim, door handles, etc. and trust me you don't want to get wax on black trim. Better safe than sorry!

I use blue painters tape. I place the product on by hand near the trim and emblems and avoid getting near the edge. If you use a rotorary then i would cover the vents under your front wipers to keep any dust build up from getting in them and tape up the trim.if your not use to a rotorary you may sling product all over the place..Others who do this may have another option for you as well.

3M's Blue Painting tape works well. It is about 2 inches thick and can be found at Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot etc. The PC isn't as rough with splatted as is a rotary so you don't necessarily have to tape off. Some products will stain the trim whereas others won't. If I know that one of the products that I'm going to be using will stain, I tape off.

Thanks everyone---both our cars are brand nw. and I don't want to end up with them looking worse than before I started~!!~!~

I recall reading some time ago about a good product to use "in case" I get polish or wax on my trim. Anyone remember what that was? I can hit a Pep Boys to pick it up if they carry it------don't have time for an on-line only product.

Thanks

If you apply any trim dressing prior to polishing, the polish most likely won't stain the trim. Once you are finished just wipe off any polish or wax residue and maybe apply some more dressing after and you'll keep them looking new.

Any trim dressing or plastic shine would work for this purpose but I'm not to sure with the durability with OTC dressings.

The first few times that I used the PC I taped the car up. I stopped doing it though because I wasn't getting any splatter. Any crevices which get polish in them or plastic/rubber which gets polish on it I just clean out with a detailing brush and quick detailer. For me, it seems to be faster to clean up with a toothbrush than it is to tape up before hand.
