Acronym Change - 07-29-2004, 12:44 PM

Okay.

So I have some time on my hands and thought I would see if I can cause some trouble here.

It's about an acronym - more specifically, the acronym for 'microfiber'.

Currently, the use of "MF" is automatically (usually) associated with microfiber. However, it also has other connotations, which I won't delve into, as well as being 'scientifically' (sp?) incorrect.

As all the math and science dudes know, 'M' is the universal symbol for "Mega" (big). We all know that you certainly don't want to use Megafiber cloths for cleaning our paint. It would leave big ugly scratches. Instead, we all use "microfiber" cloths, because they work so well. As all the science and math dudes also know, the universal symbol for "micro" is "u".

So here's my proposal: "Change the acronym for microfiber from "MF" to "uF" and assign "MF" to other duties, such as, "You are a stupid MF", or something like that.

Anybody with me?

Being one of those engineer types, electrical to be exact, uF means microfarad to me (a common unit of measurement for capacitance). To be even a little more picky, the "u" should really be a mu symbol. Mu is micro, or one millionth, or 10^-6. I don't know if your comptuer will display it correctly, but a mu is --> "µ"

Oh forget it. I'm just too anal

I was mostly kidding. But I know there are a few other engineers around and they might be as anal as myself

Because the mu symbol it difficut for most people to type, and the the 'u' is probably just as accepted, what would you think about uFb (micro-FiBer)?

When I read Freedre, post about using a u, I thought he meant Mu, but I could not find the Mu key on my keyboard.

My vote is to continue using MF.

Would the change be just on DC or internet wide?

Eric

I was trying to think of some gems of old age wisdom to add to this, but then I remembered, hell, I never was that smart to begin with.
