My first car was a 1975 Ford F-100 with a big block and a column shift three speed with worn out shift tubes, some of you older members may get a chuckle out of this, But when I first got in it and tried to start it up it started going backwards and I told the guy I was buying it from that something was wrong with it. After he was through laughing at me he explained what it was all about and how to drive it. I was mortified because I did'nt know how to drive a stick shift let alone a three on the tree. I at that point had ridden motorcycles and had an Idea of what to do so it was'nt too bad until on the way home on a very busy road the worn out shift tubes locked up between 1st and 2nd and I had no Idea how to fix it. After 20 minutes of having other drivers shout at me and blowing horns at me I got under the truck and gave the shift rods a good shake and off I went. Just one of many frustrating lessons

You will be amazed how many young kids can't drive a stick. We hire guys all the time and when they finally come out of training and get their company truck. Several of them will come back with their keys to me and say I need a different truck, I can't drive a stick. I always tell them well you better learn. We used to make our 20 yr old secretary take them out and teach them how to drive one. It was a humbling experience, when an extremely beautiful 20 yr old girl is teaching these tough macho guys how to drive a stick.

I learned to drive on a 28 ft grain truck with a split axle, and you had to double clutch to shift.
