In a matter of 3 hours - 08-10-2010, 04:10 PM

I put a portfolio of pictures together with a flier and hit the road with a pocket full of business cards this morning. I stopped at an insurance brokerage firm, a wheelchair bus firm and a local garage, pitching the fact that I would custom design a detailing package to fit any budget. I first introduced myself then showed the pics and my flier then handed them my card.

All of the people I talked to asked what I charge, I explained to them that in order to give them the correct and best package that would work for them that I would need to know a little about how they intend on caring for the vehicle because it wouldn't be fair to sell a show car detail to a car owner that intended to use a tunnel wash etc.etc.

In a matter of 3 hours I booked a car, an SUV, a pickup truck, a 30 foot RV and 3 shuttle buses, all of which will get a daily driver type of one step polishing detail. I guess I better lay off the marketing and get some of this work out of the way but it just goes to show that there is all sorts of work out there just for the asking and of course with a good presentation.

Being a one man band is tough but this has been a hopeful day for me. I just wanted to share it here to show some of the newer members that once you get through the initial learning curves, you should not be afraid to get out there and sell your details

Way to go. I'm thinking most people would be envious of your success. No doubt it has something to do with the confidence you have in yourself. If you can't sell yourself you can't make money.

There was a lot of free details and hard work involved in attaining the level of experience that I have today. I learn something new nearly every day and have come a long way and I have a lot of folks here at DC to thank for all of their help along the way. So Thanks DC members and sponsors!! Just feeling grateful I guess.

I think I have taken a shift toward daily driver production detailing with the option of offering the show car details. Up until this past week this detailing venture was just a hobby. Now it's do or die so I need to provide the service that most people want to buy. As much as I like going for complete swirl removal type details I have to retrain my eye a little to do the production type jobs. It is somewhat of a relief I believe.

I think it is smart to find out what the customer expects and what they are willing to pay for.

This may help avoid problems later.

Good job TD! One thing is for certain, one of the upsides of being a one-man show is that you have complete and total control over QC!

Just curious, did you encounter any hostility from anyone as you were out making calls? I've found that in my area, a lot of people just get ticked off when you attempt to solicit to them in a business, regardless of the approach.

I may have another one for you to add to your list!

The wifey just ordered an X5. I told the dealer do not even look at the paint when it arrives. Hopefully this one will not be all marred up like the Z!!! But you never know!

Glad to read things are going well for you Dave. Ask me if I ever purchased a machine or other supplies for the Z. I think we know the answer to that...
