Engine Detailing~ How much do you charge?

Lately I have been offering engine detailing to my customers, but from now on I want a rock solid price so they know in advance.

What are you charging for engine detailing?

For a daily driven car with a dirty engine I usually charge a flat rate of $50. (Sometimes I can do it in 20 minutes, sometimes an hour).

For an engine that`s really trashed and will take over an hour to clean I charge $75.

That seems pretty fair. I have had quite a few engine requests lately so I wanted to see what others charge.

For normal dirty engines I can usually get away with a moderate stream of water, no full pressure washer blasting.

The only thing that scares me is those engines that are really dirty, are pressure washers the best for that then?

I know guys who use pressure washers routinely and have never had a problem.

I NEVER use high pressure water in the engine bay.

For really filthy engine bays, I buy Gunk Foamy Engine Cleaner. It does a really good job of de-greasing and the bubbling/foaming action loosens the bulk of the big stuff.

Use the whole can. Then scrub and rinse. Sometimes I have to use a toilet brush to reach some of the lower areas.

Make sure you get the FOAMY engine cleaner, not the engine de-greaser. I don`t like the way the degreaser works (or doesn`t work!). Foamy is better IMO.

Before I do an engine cleaning, I wrap the alternator with a plastic bag (like a Wal Mart bag) then spray all the electrical connections with WD40 or something similiar. After the scrubbing and a low pressure rinse, I make sure the engine starts and runs for a few minutes....just to be safe. Price wise, Bill`s rate is about the same as I charge.

It takes me about an hour and a half to do a basic engine, engine bay, cleanup and detail, $75.00 to $100.00 on average.

For a car with a rear mounted engine, like a 360 or 430 Ferrari, double or triple the time and price.
