Advice on black Mercedes - 01-09-2010, 02:40 PM

I'm new here and have a few questions. I recently bought a black 2007 SL55 after owning corvettes for the last 10 years. The SL is in pretty good shape but of course full of swirls. I only had a few days to work on it before the weather started getting bad and will not truly get to detail it again until late Feb or March. I washed, clayed, used Wolfgang total swirl remover, WG paintwork polishing enhancer and WG finishing glaze. Topped it off with Adams machine polish. As far as the swirls I probably got about 80% of it, more time in the spring I can do better. To the average person it looks pretty good but I think I can get more out of it. I was thinking about trying Pinnacle Souveran over the Adams or trying the Blackfire Wet Ice combo, any advvice is appreciated. In the spring I'll get to the wheels, wheel wells, engine, etc. Also the leather seats are perforated, does anyone handle cleaning the seats differently when they are full of little holes? One good thing is the Mercedes clear coat is not as hard as my last Corvettes, that was a hard clear coat. Thanks for any help, also it is not a daily driver, just for fun.

Welcome to the site from Sonoma County CA

You topped off your WG glaze with a polish, what you did there was remove the glaze, polish is an abrasive and is designed to enhance the shine and remove anything that is on the surface. My suggestion for now is if you want to get the paint looking more swirl free is to mask them off for now until you can get at them in the spring. Poorboys black hole glaze is one of those it is a great enhancement on paint and has a small amount of filler that will mask those swirls, then I would get a good paste wax like Nattys paste wax from Poorboys.

I also am assuming you are doing this all by hand, the PB is a great hand application

I actually used the Adams machine super wax in the end not the polish as I stated. I'm going to research the Poorboy's products you mentioned, thank you for the help. I'm using the newer Porter Cable unit for applying products.
