You're winter protection combo! - 07-30-2005, 02:50 PM

Well, I'm kinda bored and wanted to get some opinions on the subject at hand. It's kinda early but not too early for me and the rest of the DC members to think about winter protection. Last winter I didn't know anything I know now so I'm looking into products for winter protection.

What products have you used?
How well did they hold up? Different areas are worse than others so....
What do you plan on using this winter?

And any other info you could give on your process/products. Thanks

I was thinking about AIO + SG x 3. Seems to be popular for winter. Or maybe #21. I really like the slickness of UPP and maybe that's an option just not sure how well it holds up in winter.

First I wash, strip everything off, and clay. Then this is what I do:

Pro Polish
UPPx3
#16x3
I also try to S&W/S&G whenever possible.

I suppose you could substitute Collinite Insulator Wax for #16 but I like (and have) #16 so that's what I use. Last winter I actually used #20 alone, it didn't work as well as I would have liked.

Last winter I used #20 topped with #16, and it lasted about 10 weeks. This year I think I will order in some Collinite 476 and try that. People say that it lasts longer than #16, so I am thinking pretty hard about trying it. Going to be hard to put something other than #16 on our cars tho, I do really like that stuff.

Hey Tuba, how would you compare the durrability of #16 to say Natty's P21S or any other carnuba wax for winter or even summer "protection"? I keep hearing and reading about #16 and think I might order some. Not sure what kinda look it will give for silver. Protection for winter is my main concern but looks is also nice to have

My personal combo is AIO followed by two coats of SG. The through the winter if we get a warm enough day or two, I'll add a new coat of SG. Couple winters back I was able to add protection the very end of December and again in late February. Last winter, not once did I get an extra opportunity.

And of course I try to put that AIO and SGx2 on as late in the year as possible.

Last wiinter I use AIO followed by 3 coats of SG and then topped that with 2 coats of #16. Added additional coats of #16 when ever the winter weather allowed. I'm very happy with that combo.

Take a look at the Zaino package! Start well before winter clay it Z1 or ZFX then Z2 at least 3 to 4 layers going into winter. Then when I can I wash it and Z6 it, once it warms up start over. You will have a durable finish that should keep your car looking good all winter long.

#16 is more durable and has more of the look of a sealant than waxes like Natty's (Blue Natty's anyway, that's what I have). I get a couple weeks durability out of one coat, but I find that having four of five coats adds to the look and helps #16 rival some sealants for durability. I've got 5 coats on right now and I've still got tons of beading, I put those coats on in March. So you know, it's going to be hard to order it as Megs has discontinued it, Ace Hardware stores still have some and there's a thread started by blonzz on here that has a few other places you can find it.

I can't remember what wax I ended with last year, but I go to the pay & spray bays when they aren't busy and after washing the car I used Poorboys QD+. Quick, easy, nice look and it seemed to keep the finish beading well through the winter.

I went with UPC and 15 to 18 coats of UPP on my wife's and 18 to 23 on mine. The road grime and salt did not adhere to the paint hardly at all. When I washed my cars the dirt came off very easilyand the finish was still slick.By the end of February I could tell that I was losing the sealant. The dirt wasn't coming off quite as easliy. This year I'm going with EX-P.

15-18 coats? wow!

collinite insultaor wax can be bought at adance auto parts in the boat care section. right next to the car care section.

my opinion when it coes to winter protection even tho ive lived in miami my whole life, is to sg 3x's and add insulator whenever a good warm day is present.

Same here, and that's in some nasty, salt filled Detroit winters.
