Harley Detail Question on Spoke rims?

I did this Harley on Saturday..it wasn`t all that bad just time consuming about 6 hours start to finish.

Question the front spoke rim was covered with this bakes on crud...turns out that it`s a stainless steel spoke and they gather over time some organic buildup..hard to describe it but the only way I`ve been able to get it off is with steel wool, extremely time consuming.

That got me thinking about using a acid based cleaner to see if that would lift the crud..

    Any other thoughts on this?

I take it iron-x type products didn`t help. maybe give spray brake/parts cleaner a try.
