I thought My SIL Loved me, but .... - 11-25-2008, 07:20 PM

I detailed my Sister-in-Law’s Lexus. I thought she loved me, but if she did she wouldn’t have let it get so horribly filthy! She says she got it dirty just for me. I spent most of my time on the exterior. The interior was not bad except for some stains on the floor mats that I didn’t have time to clean. I started about 11:00 AM and finished around 5:30. I had a short break during for lunch and an errand.

I was pleased with how well the exterior came out. I love the paint on this car. It is white with flecks of color. I wish I could have gotten a finished picture in the sun to so off the flecks. They really popped with the White Diamond + Natty’s Red!

Wheels:
1Z Einszett Wheel Cleaner. I really like this product. I don’t care for the strong smell, but it cleans really well. I think it is on par with P21S and less expensive.
I used Amazing Roll Off on the tires and wheel wells.

Once car was clean, I finished the wheels with PB Wheel Sealant, Pinnacle Black Onyx Tire Gel, and Chem Guys Bare Bones. The Wheel Sealant takes time to apply and is a bit tough to remove but the wheels sure looked good afterward!

Some before shots:

Exterior:
As you can see from the pictures there was bird poop in many places and a lot of grime on the car. I used PB Bug Squash (diluted 3:1) on the bird poop and as an extra cleaner on some of the really dirty bits.
I washed with PB Super Slick & Suds + a black Shmitt

Bug Squash worked well. I squirted some on this nasty blob, let is soak for a minute and then hosed it off.

Nasty Bird Bomb:

After Bug Squash:

Once I had a clean and dry car I applied PB White Diamond with the UDM and a blue Lake Country Smart pad. The White Diamond really shined up nicely and made the flakes of color in the paint look great. After that was done I applied, by hand, a coat of Natty’s Red. I let it sit for an hour or so while I continued with other parts. I don't know about you, but Natty's Red looks more pink to me than red. But hey, I'm confident in my manhood to use a pink wax!

Interior:
Shop Vac.
Door Jambs cleaned with PB Spray & Wipe.
PB Natural Look followed by Pinnacle Leather Cleaner & Conditioner on the seats.

Glass was cleaned with Stoners IG. After all was done I pulled the car around to the front as the sun was setting and did a quick wipe down with Pinnacle Souveran Spray Wax to give it a nice glow.

I wish the after pictures were better, but the sun was almost down.

Finished:

She was very happy with the finished car. I guess she loves me again . LOL! But man am I knackered after this one. I think I'm getting too old for this!

I really dislike the bird bombs on my cars. Happy inlaws can be a good thing. I wanted to do the inlaws car but it was just 45 and no patience to ONR outside in a car port.

Bunky, I can't fault you there! That is a bit cold to be washing the car. We were lucky today to have a beautiful day. The weather started out chilly but warmed up to 70 degrees. I was able to do the entire detail outside on the driveway. Not to cold or hot.

It does look good.
Just a couple of questions.
Did you use any paint cleaner or polish other than the White Diamond? It didn't read like you did.
Was the paint in pretty good condition to start with?
(Other than being dirty.)

I'm surprised at the results with just the White Diamond as a prep. Looks like I may have to try the stuff.

White Diamonds supposedly has mild cleaners and with a white pad he should have got some surface prep.

Nice reflections on the white.
When you said you left the red for an hour, did you mean you left it on for an hour then wiped off execess?

The paint was in good condition. I was surprised that it didn't have swirls and the like. There were a few scratches that were too deep to get out with a UDM. There were a couple of scratches that had some embedded dirt and the White Diamond didn't help so I used some Pro Polish on just those (2 or 3) spots. Then I went back over them with the White Diamond. The White Diamond did clean a couple of little spots but I would say it does not clean much.

I applied the Red to the entire car and did not buff it off with an MF until about an hour had passed. Meanwhile I put the sealant on the wheels and started on the interior. I was worried the Natty's Red would be difficult to remove after that long but it was easy to buff off.

And there is our answer!
To avoid swirls, don't wash the car.

Seriously, that was probably part of the reason it didn't have a lot of flaws.

I agree with that. A car that has been poorly washed will be worse than one not often washed with just some paint cleaning. This is why I think many people like NuFinish especially on "leave them alone" cars. It does perk up the paint since all it needs is a little cleaning but no swirls to detract.
