I just visually inspect them when getting gas. It's pretty easy to spot a tire that is really low. It's the 2-5 lb. difference that requires a tester for me.
I'm also a firm believer in running the pressures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
I do check the oil at every gas fill, though. I got in that habit as a kid when some of my cars needed oil as often as they needed gas.
