Dull paint after polishing..

I taped off my girlfriends trunk last week and tested out the porter cable 7424.

I started out with the orange pad at speed 5 and worked the compound (CG Medium Compound) until only a slight haze remained.

Then I surveyed how many scratches and swirls I removed. Not too many, so I did another pass with the orange, this time at speed 6. Nope, nothing. So I bumped it up to yellow at speed 6 and went very very slowly, this got a good amount out but a few still remained.

I left it at that point and was looking at it in the sun the other day and noticed it looked dull next to unpolished side. So today I taped off the same spot and went at it with the orange pad using OP to try to clear it up. I worked it until the polish was nearly translucent. It still looks dull to me. Any ideas?

The first picture looks like micromarring from using an aggressive pad... however it seems like the swirls should have been removed using the yellow pad and the polish. I haven`t tried the CG polish but maybe another polish would be better. Once you get the swirls to your liking you need to step down to a less aggressive polish to clear up any micromarring from the aggressive pads.... The hazing is normal when you use cutting pads.

could be a chemical pad combo.....what brand of pads are you using...unfortuantly different color for different companys mean different cuts....(i personally use edge) so orange for me is the most aggressive



im not familiar with CG stuff but perhaps your combo was pretty aggressive so you will need two stage polishing to bring back the color, ie two seperate polishes or 1 polish and two different pads



but before you try that try hitting it one more pass with your previous combo

What kind of car is it also? Honda/Acura tends to have VERY soft paint. Then there are some paints that are extremely hard it varies from manufacturer to vehicle even. And yes it looks like the product/pad combo is way too agressive.

I`d try a white pad and a mix of CG light cut and EZ Creme.

As Tim said,,try a light cut polish with a polishing pad next...I got some stuff from Nickmach1 called spiderweb remover...I thinks it called Scratch and Swirl Buff remover now...its a nice product....will clear that dull look no problem....any finishing polish will do it....

The pads are Lake Country 6 1/2 inch CCS.

The car is a 2002 Ford Escort.



So do you think I should try a white pad with some SSR1 or Optimum Polish?
