vinyl wrapping center console - 06-28-2007, 02:14 PM

So I'm considering wrapping the center hump and dash of my Reflex with body matching vinyl. At the very least it needs to be wrapped with matte black vinyl to save it from the scuffs it seems to love picking up. I did a little photoshop work to see what it would look like. What do you think?

Without vinyl:

Center hump only:

Whole center console:

After seeing it with the whole center wrapped, I'm just not sure about it. I'm thinking about fabricating a couple pieces out of carbon fiber and replacing them that way if this doesn't work. I think that would look pretty good.

Wow! I am impressed with your Photoshop work! Sorry, it's a bit off topic, but how did you do the reflections in the upper center console in pic 3??? (I mean the console part you left black in pic 2)

I was just adjusting the brighness and color balance of the black. I would have had the whole thing matching if I would have done the hump and the center console together, but since I did them seperately and it was several stages of brightening to get it that way, it just wasn't going to match.

On another note, I did pick up the vinyl today, so I'm going to give it a shot. I got the silver and the matte black. If the silver doesn't look right then I'm going to peel it off and go for the black. That will look much better I think. It will be easier to clean and keep looking good anyway.

Will the vinyl wrap be more durable than the plastic to scuffs and scrapes? My gut tells me that dragging your foot across vinyl verses plastic, plastic would hold up better. Maybe you could have someone shoot it with LineX or Rhino Lining. They have a number of colors available as well as the standard black.

based on past experience with wrapping side skirts with vinyl, I'd say that it is more durable. They just don't get as scuffed up looking. I dunno.... I guess we'll find out, eh? I can always take it off if it doesn't work right.

I personally don't car for the color match, the black looks better.
Don't know if it would work but, what about covering it in something clear?

I thought about that, but the clear material I would need to use is really costly. It's worth it to me to spend ten or twelve bucks to experiment, but I'm not dropping fifty bucks on the material I would need to make this look good in clear and then tear it off if I don't like it.

Makes the bike look a lot more uniform in its lines...I'd say yes!
