Boat Detailing Question

Really more of a product question. I do a lot of boat detailing in the summer and have always wondered how you would go about detailing a boat that's in the water. Does anyone know what the detailer is standing on in this picture?

It looks like a raft of some kind and he's holding on to the boat for balance and working with one hand ...doing the hull of boats in the water is not a great idea as you have limited area and are not going to get the bottom which needs the most work. You can do decks and interiors in the water. also you must check with local envorinmental laws if you are working in the water as to which products can be used and make sure they are water soluable.

it looks like he has a platform on a dock flotation foam block..

Scottlee a forum member here does boats ...and he uses a raft or boat to do boats in the water.....you may want to contact him for any boat detailing info....he is very informative on doing boats....knows his stuff...

I believe the forum owner Troy has done his fair share of boats in the water as well. Hopefully he'll pipe up and let you know.

If I where you for boats on the water..I would only detail the insides...That pic that you posted looks like an accident looking for a place to happen!....I can't even imagine what would happen to that guy if he fell in the water holding on to an electrical appliance..ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I have done about 6 boats and all have been on trailers, as Steve stated there is a fair amount of work on the underside.

Boats are not by any means my specialty. I have only worked from a raft one time and it was not as easy as I had hoped. The majority of the boats we do are on trailers. If they aren't, we only do the top of the boat.

I used to hate them but now that I have a helper, I actually like detailing boats for the most part. Mainly because one job can fill our day.

Ask me if I like to do them in the summer and I might have a different answer.

I wish I didn't have a computer in front of me and I could be out detailing all day. Man, do I ever wish that. It is still snowing out here and detailing season isn't going to start for several weeks yet. I'm jonsing for a good detailing day soooooooo bad right now. I've got half of March and the first week of April all booked up right now.

I've done a fair share of boats, only one in water and that was the last...it's real good money but it can involve a lot of work

Grass is always greener.....

Been mobile detailing for 16 years (that's 16 Florida summers), and it would be nice to work inside for a summer or two.

Maybe it's time for me to open a shop.

I was reading over this thread as I am doing a rather difficult boat today and this post reminded me of another funny story.

A fellow detailer friend of mine was out at a marina working on a boat and another company started working on one right next to them. They showed up all ragged out and brought out the boom box playing some loud obnoxious music. Definitely didn't care about making a good impression.

As they started, one of them got busy with his rotary buffer and wool pad and started going at it pretty good. My friend heard one of them say, "Make sure you don't drop that buffe......." Before he got the words out the buffer was in the water. He had hit something that made it jerk out of his hands.

After all the cussing and yelling, and after drying the buffer out. It actually worked again and the same guy started buffing with it again and here is the hillarious part..... He dropped it again!!!

Moral of the story.... Learn from your mistakes and take a lesson or two from the mentally challenged.
