If you are looking for an OTC RTU tire cleaner, try the Unival brand from Home Hardware. (Might have to go to a smaller town, as they are typically the "small town hardware store" type franchises.) Works on the tire and the wheel. Light scrubbing and a rinse and you are done. Smells pretty good for a tire cleaner too!

I know for an over the counter brand that Eagle One A-Z does work just as well as my Castle 222 APC. I just tried some DuPont Junk that i found at Big Lots and it ended up in the garbage. Stained the wheels.

An old thread, but since it is back, here's some updated information.
In the past 12 to 18 months, all my tire cleaning has been done with just Bold N Bright. I did use an APC in January of 2008 when they were so bad, but since that time, BnB has been the only product used.
Our vehicles are usually washed at least once week year round, weather permitting. I'm sure that makes a big difference in how good it works for me. I do clean and dress the tires at each wash.
I spray it on, scrub it with a brush and wipe the tire with a cotton terry towel. Clean, black, matte finish.
It also does a good job on the white letter tires on the Corvette.

Don't feel too bad, I couldn't get to the third page for a while then either.

As for the process, I follow a similar regimen. Similar but not identical, after cleaning with an APC (even on my personal vehicles) I scrub the tire w/BnB and then move on to washing the vehicle. It seems that with the soap and rinse water running over the tires have a similar effect as a final wipe, ie. the resulting appearance is more matte than gloss. Depending on the tires, sometimes I may have to do some touch up with BnB and a tire swipe.

I use Michelin tire cleaner or Bleche White, then follow with B&B or Michelin stuff.
