father's day experiment

Since it was Father's Day I got to spend my time doing the things I love to do.....a morning of fly-fishing and afternoon detailing.

The subject was my wife's 1996 Pacific Green Taurus (again ) and I wanted to do a little test (again ). Now I've used Poorboy's Pro Polish as a prep for UPP more than a few times and it works very well. No problems (at least that I can see) with bonding as the Pro Polish is water based and doesn't leave behind any oils or fillers...just a clean, polished surface. But I recently got some 3M PI-III Machine Glaze and liked the way it worked. The new PI-III glaze is supposed to be filler free and also supposed to contain some polymers for protection. Hmmm, filler free and polymers? So using the rotary and separate pads I did half the car (split it down the middle) with Poorboy's Pro Polish and half with the 3M PI-III Machine Glaze. Both sides glistened and looked great!

Next, on went the UPP by hand using a moistened yellow foam applicator. It has been a while since I used UPP but after a few seconds applying it I remembered why I love it so much. Using the moist applicator and two tiny dabs of UPP I was able to spread it paper thin and cover a pretty large area. One bottle of UPP could last the life of a car. Forty five minutes later the UPP buffed off with almost zero effort (no surprise there) and zero streaking. Oh man, what a beautiful shine! I had forgotten just how slick UPP leaves a finish. Simply a joy to use.

Initially there is no difference in the look of the two UPP'd sides (the one with PB Pro Polish and 3M PI-III). I'll keep an eye on the two sides to see if they develop any difference in look or durability.

This afternoon has rekindled an old flame. UPP is wonderful. Hmmm, maybe one or two more coats of UPP then top with EX.

I tried a similar combo last weekend. 3M PI III machine polish(don't know if it is the new formula or not), then 3M IHG, then UPC, then UPP. I figured since both 3M polishes were silicone and wax free why not try it. The car looked amazing! So far no bonding issues, if I can resist another coat of UPP I will report back about durability

When you guys do the next coat of UPP, what do you use to clean the surface off with first?

Nothing, after you've done the initial prep you can just add layers of UPP. Right Natty?

But after 24 hours, even if the car sat still (which mine doesnt), there will be various debris that should be cleaned off.

Right....following a wash or Spray and Wipe session. THe finish still needs to be clean of dirt.

Natty, do you think a QD+ or a Platinum UGE application would also be sufficient between coats?

If you're objective is to add layers of UPP then don't use QD+ inbetween. QD+ contains carnauba which would need to be stripped before applying UPP. Platinum UGE is perfect for use inbetween coats of UPP but you still need to wash the vehicle first. Spray and Wipe as a quick wash/wipe down then Platinum UGE would be the way I go.

If you go with the Spray and Wipe I would suggest going to the 32 oz size. Only 4 dollars more for twice as much product plus 4-Star includes a free mf towel.

I did EX over UPP (5x), awesome. It added a little depth. UPP and EX are slightly different than each other. Kinda like comparing fine scotches that are both top quality. In differenct situations one seems better then you try to other, back forth. You get the idea.
