What Is It About Red Paint? - 02-13-2005, 11:52 AM

All the red cars that I see where the owner does not keep up the paint looks like the paint is oxidationized. Steve at Poorboys once said that it has something to do with the pigmentation of the paint. Even the clear coated ones if not taken care of look crappy.

Anyone have some input on this?

Thanks

I believe the red paint pigment is the weakest in the spectrum and therefore oxidizes faster than other colors.

Red paint is strange that way. If you don't take care of it looks crapy, but if you do, it's very satisfying.

I think Ben54 hit it on the head...stay on top of it and man, it looks sweet.
Neglect it, it looks like POS.

Edgey04...for mine that pulls out depth and wet, I use Sonus Paint Cleaner or 1zpp, Adams Brilliant Glaze, PB EX, then top with Nattys.
For maint. I use Adams DS, and then top with Optimum Car Wax.
Looks fantastic !

yes the Red pigment tends to fade faster than most, and is also one of the most expensive . It seems to be one of the most affected by UV rays and must be taken care of better than most other colors to remain vibrant. Clearcoated reds seem to do a bit better than the old single stage paints and can be revived much more easily than enamels and laquers could and stay that way longer.
Proper maintenence can make red vehicles look better than most any other color, but you do also attract the most police

if you want Poorboy's stuff and you want to use a credit card, go to PAC. They are a poorboy's distributor, and they are also a sponsor, so you get 10% off with the discount code "detailcity"

:stupid I agree. Even though both red cars I regularly take care of are dark red they seem to need more care, but in the end it's worth it.

What Is It About Red Paint?

Why photo degradation (UV fading) has a pronounced effect on red paint. The sun gives off many different kinds of radiation. Most people are familiar with the visible light spectrum or sunlight, with colours ranging from violet to red (violet being in the centre and red a little to the left). Red is subjected to both Visible (VR) and Infrared radiation (IR)which is the most concentrated form of radiation.Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is similar to light only with shorter wavelengths. UVR cannot be seen by the human eye or felt on the skin, but it is more powerful and hazardous than visible light.
